Begonias
in Hanging Baskets
using the 'sustainable' and 'environmentally friendly' Eco Aus Liners.
The story of the Begonias in my baskets.
Begonia are easy too grow and
they are spectacular with their brilliant flowers (red, in this instance) and
dark waxy leaves. They can tolerate shaded light and full sun, although in extreme
sun conditions, the
plants do show some signs of stress.
The seedlings were bought in
May 2010 to set up a display for the Nambour Garden Show, which runs every year
in July at Nambour, Queensland, of course.
They weren't that advanced by the time the Show came around,
but they did have some brilliant red flowers, as in
Image 1, taken June 29.
Image 2 was taken July 6.
Image 3, also taken July 6, shows the pansy and the portulaca.
Image 4 is a different angle. the photo was taken from the shaded side., it
shows deep variations of colour in the leaves.
I was disappointed with the rate of growth of the portulaca, and I thought the
pansies were slow to compared to the other plants grown for this exercise.
By the Spring Show in September, at Spring Hill, Brisbane, there were more flowers
as shown.
Image 6 taken in August, just before the Spring Show.
The
last image was taken in October 2010. After this it reached about 30cm in height,
became straggly and untidy. So I started snipping pieces off to put into other
baskets, as they can grow easily from cuttings. I was disappointed with the
pansies and the portulaca, although at the time of writing this, December 2010,
they were starting to come into their own. Maybe I'm just too impatient.
This series of baskets potted specifically for the Shows in 2010, and was very
successful.
I would put it down to the feeding almost every week with Sea Sol and Scotts
20+20+20.
And I would like to say, that
if I can grow hanging baskets like this, anyone can.
It only takes a few minutes watering every second day or so, more in summer
of course,
and about an hour on the weekend to organise the fertilising.
